The Job (re: reason)

Why do you work? To make money, to live?
Why did you choose to work as your position before? Because it's something you enjoy? Or just someplace related to your study? Or just simply by the vacancy?

     Let me tell you something.
To be honest, I chose to be embryologist just because there was an opportunity. My lecturer's colleague offered the position, then I simply applied to it. Although as I told you in my previous post that I didn't really like any study using microscope when I was in college.Well.. To me, there are two types of job seekers. The first one who sticks to the self-idealism, ambition, passion, etc. The second one who applies to any job vacancy. Me, number two. I have my own dream (I guess haha), but I also have my priorities.

Four months have passed. I wake up everyday (except Sunday :p) to work. I do what I should do. At four pm, I go home. It repeats. One day, I and one of my senior had to do surgical sperm retrieval. This is an procedure to retrieve sperm surgically from testis, because there is no sperm found in patient's ejaculate. That day was my second experience to join the surgery. Nervous? No need to be mentioned-.- Of course!!

On my first experience, me and my senior found the sperm. Good news. But not on my second one. No sperm found. The patient had no sperm... To the doctor, we promised to do recheck after back to our laboratory. But before that, my senior must meet the patient wife to explain the result. After my senior met her, she had no reaction but cried. And I never prepared myself to see this kind of situation. I stood still in some distance and didn't know what to do. The fact that they couldn't have biological child is hurt. The fact that they couldn't be a parent is hurt. But for this case, the embryologist couldn't help.

I usually did what I did to get the work done. To analyze sperm. To wash sperm for insemination. I never truly think that the result might have great impact to other people. It could cause source of happiness or huge pain. Working in fertility clinic means you help people to have a child. The most expected gift to married couple is a child, right? About two days ago I did sperm washing for insemination. And I do really hope the patient will have positive result in two weeks.

So, I wrote this just to share how I change my perspective on what I do. Maybe you don't know how much help you have done, but I believe every job is about helping others. Or even though it's just a simple job, don't forget to be sincere. Because focusing on helping others is more enjoyable than focusing on your payday :)
